Schedule an appointment online, and we’ll provide upfront pricing and guaranteed workmanship.

Gas vs. Electric Dryer

There are two main types of dryers: gas and electric. Mr. Appliance services both.

These are the main differences:

  • Electric dryers cost less, but the energy cost is slightly more expensive, depending on the rates where you live. Electric dryers are also easier to install. They may also produce fewer emissions, especially over time as coal and natural gas are replaced by renewable sources of energy.
  • Gas dryers operate on natural gas or propane. They cost more upfront but are more economical over time (after about five years). They emit more greenhouse gases and pose a carbon monoxide risk.

Electric Dryer Service Details

Frequently Asked Questions

My electric dryer won’t start. What’s wrong with it?

There’s a chance a circuit breaker tripped or the machine came unplugged. But it could also be a broken start switch or a bad thermostat causing your dryer to not start.

Why is my electric dryer not heating?

This could be the sign of a bad fuse, temperature switch, thermostat, or heating coil. Most of these will require professional repair—count on Mr. Appliance to handle it.

Why is my electric dryer drum not turning?

If the motor is running but the drum isn’t spinning, it’s most likely a broken belt—but a bad roller, motor, or idler pulley could also be the culprit.

Do electric dryers need a vent?

Nearly all electric dryers need a vent to expel the warm, moist air and the lint. Most dryers vent to the outdoors. There are, however, electric “ventless dryers” that are essentially hot air vacuums, pulling room-temperature air from your laundry room, heating it up, and then blasting it through your tumbling wet laundry to dry your clothes.

How can I tell if my dryer is gas or electric?

If there’s only one cord attached to your dryer—a heavy-duty electric plug that runs into a 220V outlet—you have an electric dryer. If there’s also a thin connector (typically stainless steel) hooked into your dryer in addition to the electric wire, you have a gas dryer.
