Love Your Kitchen
Take time to love your appliances and they will love you back. Follow these steps from Mr. Appliance to cook up some romance, instead of frustration with inefficient appliances.
Give Your Oven Some Lovin’
- Don’t run the self-cleaning cycle within one week of a big dinner – ovens have a tendency to fail during or right after a self-cleaning cycle.
- Clean the reflector bowls under the burners to help cook more efficiently.
XOXO For Your Dishwasher
- If you’re unsure whether or not an item is dishwasher safe, just wash it by hand.
- Run an empty dishwasher with a cup of white vinegar to eliminate odors and buildup.
Keep Your Garbage Disposal Smelling Like Roses
- Place a handful of ice cubes in the disposal. Add lemon, orange or lime peels and run disposal with cold water for 15 to 30 seconds. Continue to rinse with cold water.
- To avoid clogging your garbage disposal, remember to not pour grease down the drain.
Rekindle Your Refrigerator
- Unplug your refrigerator and use a vacuum to remove any dust from the coils. This will help it run more efficiently and trim your utility bills.
- Make sure it’s loaded properly. Contents should be evenly distributed.

Make your fridge work for you and save some energy. As the months begin to warm up with spring and summer weather, take the time to use what you’ve got with these tips that will not only color your energy green but your pocket too.
-

A Healthy Fridge
Your schedule is not the only thing packed during the week, with parties, potluck dinners and your kid’s friends, so is your fridge. Your fridge is designed with certain shelves and drawers for a reason, so use them. Keep juice and condiments in the door shelves and fruits and vegetables in the crisper drawer. This will move most items to the outer edges of your fridge to clear space for leftovers and other food.
- From cookies to countertops, vanilla extract can smell your kitchen fresh all week long. Cover up the fish from last night’s dinner by heating up a microwave-safe bowl of vanilla extract for three minutes. Then grab a rag or paper towel and use it to wipe surfaces for stubborn stains and residue in the microwave. To eliminate fridge odors, pour vanilla extract into a bowl with a paper towel and wipe down the refrigerator walls. Your kitchen will smell like fresh baked cookies without the baking!
- Check and care for the rubber seals surrounding the inside of your fridge by using mild soap twice a year to prevent them from drying out, cracking or splitting. Use your money to test the seals by placing a dollar bill halfway inside the refrigerator door. If the dollar pulls out easily, then your losing money in more than one way and it may be time to replace the rubber seals.

Cool Runnings.
You work hard in your kitchen, but is your kitchen working too hard for you? To keep your refrigerator in top shape, remember to limit the number of times you open the refrigerator door. The air suction created by the action of opening the door causes the refrigerator to lose more air than if the door were left open a little longer. Also, keep the refrigerator and freezer moderately full. Cooled mass in the refrigerator and freezer helps them stay cool more efficiently.
Refrigerators have to run constantly to keep your produce fresh and ice cream cold. Remember to keep the unit away from direct sunlight and heat-producing appliances. Refrigerators are designed to stay in a conditioned climate, so the excess heat will make your refrigerator work harder to keep cool. Give your refrigerator some breathing room by keeping the appliance at least two or three inches away from the wall. This allows more breathing room and better airflow around the condenser coils, which helps the refrigerator cool more efficiently.

Put Away the Sweaters, Pull Out the Mop & Broom
The end of a long and cold winter is an exciting time, but along with the blooming of flowers and warmer weather comes the daunting task of spring cleaning. It’s time to roll up your sleeves, crank open the windows and bring your home back to life with these spring cleaning tips from Mr. Appliance.
“Maintaining the general upkeep of your appliances can save a lot of time and money in the long run,” said Doug Rogers, president of Mr. Appliance. “Don’t neglect your appliances and start cleaning them now to avoid future problems.”
Follow these tips from Mr. Appliance® for fresh and clean appliances:
Oven
Remove oven trays and racks and soak them in warm, soapy water. Oven racks left in the oven during self-cleaning will over-heat and turn blue.
Stove
Remove the cooled burners and use a cloth with dish soap and warm water to remove residue. To attack tough burnt on food, make a baking soda and water paste to gently scrub the electric burner coil.
Dishwasher
Using a small brush dipped in hot soapy water, go around the door of the dishwasher to clean the groves in the rubber seal. Place a dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a normal cycle.
Refrigerator
Using a hand-held vacuum, remove the dust from coils underneath or on the backside of the fridge. Accumulated dust can cause the motor to overheat and costs more to run. Scrub the inside of the refrigerator with warm water and vinegar to remove residue and odor.

Kitchen Safety
By Lillyan Baker
New year, new opportunities indicates weekly trips to the gym, carrots instead of candy and an opportunity to break bad habits. How about a resolution that goes beyond 2012 and keeps your children and home safe for years to come? This year, make it a priority to childproof your kitchen and clean beyond the countertops to keep your family happy and healthy all year long.
“Your kitchen never gets a day off,” said Doug Rogers, president of Mr. Appliance Corp. “Between hot appliances and sharp cooking utensils, kids can often be in danger of hurting themselves. Fortunately, homeowners can prevent most accidents by making a few simple adjustments and educating their children about kitchen safety.”
Follow these resolution tips from Mr. Appliance to keep your kitchen clean and your kids safe:
Refrigerator
- Keep items not safe for kids on higher shelves. Place juice boxes, apple slices and cheese sticks on the lower shelves for a healthy snack within your child’s reach.
- Soak refrigerator removable parts in the sink with warm, soapy water to remove stains from food spills to keep new produce as fresh as possible.
- Position refrigerator shelves to make it difficult for children to climb inside and close the door leaving your kitchen with a dangerous hide-and-seek spot.
Stove and Oven
- Turn pot and pan handles in and away from the edge of the stove so curious hands can’t pull them down.
- Remove oven racks and wash them by hand with warm water and soap to remove caked on food that can burn in your oven.
- Establish a “safety zone” marked by a small rug or area of the kitchen to keep kids several feet away from the oven while it’s hot.
Microwave Oven
- Wipe interior microwave surfaces with a mixture of two tablespoons baking soda and one quart water to remove food stains and keep your microwave clean for future use.
- Encourage children to use an oven mitt when removing a hot plate or bowl.
- Heat a microwave-safe bowl of vanilla extract for three minutes to give your kitchen a fresh scent.
Dishwasher
- Keep the dishwasher closed when you’re not loading or unloading. Sharp utensils inside can be dangerous to children.
- Create a “safety zone” when opening the door to a steam-heavy dishwasher to avoid burns from the hot steam. Teach children to wait for dishes to cool down before unloading.
- Give your dishwasher a fresh start to thoroughly clean your dishes. Remove food residue by running an empty dishwasher with a cup of white vinegar.
Most of these resolution tips can be accomplished in a matter of minutes and keep your home safe and energy efficient, too! If you find a problem that you can’t handle, contact an appliance repair professional to help.

Premiere Issue of HGTV Magazine
The autumn season is here and it’s time to fall for something new, like the premiere issue of HGTV Magazine. I love HGTV for all of the homeowner tips and tricks, but it didn’t surprise me when they came knocking on our expert appliance repair door for simple fridge tips for their homeowners to live by. Check out a few of the tips that the article is based off of on our Mr. Appliance blog. Want more? Of course, you do! I suggest brewing up your favorite cup of pumpkin spice coffee and taking a seat at your kitchen table with the October/November issue of HGTV Magazine. Flip to page 42 and take notes on the tips in “If Your Fridge Could Talk” written by the “queen of kitchen appliance” (their words, not mine)! If our Mr. Appliance fridge could talk, I am sure it would say, “HGTV Magazine knows how to keep it cool!”
Open The Door to More Savings
·Give your refrigerator some breathing room by keeping the appliance at least two or three inches away from the wall. Also, place your refrigerator away from direct sunlight and appliances that produce heat to make your refrigerator run more efficiently.
·Do you crave a midnight snack, but can’t decide what to eat? Keep your fridge full, not only to satisfy all of your midnight munchies, but also to help the fridge save energy after recovery from the door being open.
·Check and care for the rubber seals surrounding the inside of your fridge by using mild soap twice a year to help prevent cracked and torn seals. Use your money to test the seals by placing a dollar bill halfway inside the refrigerator door. If the dollar pulls out easily, then your losing money in more than one way and it may be time to replace the rubber seals.
·Enjoy a night of leftovers and defrost your fridge regularly. The frost build-up wastes energy by making the compressor run longer.

Refresh Your Refrigerator
Summer heat can really drive up your energy bill. Take a few minutes for preventative maintenance and you can put some of that money back into your pocket.
After air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers typically use the most power in the home. Refrigerators manufactured after 2001 use at least 30 percent less energy than models made in the 1990s or earlier. If your refrigerator is an older model, it’s especially important to make sure it’s operating efficiently.
“As the temperature rises, more strain is placed on your refrigerator and freezer to keep it cold,” says Aldo Davila-Quea of the Mr. Appliance® of Marble Falls. “Appliances run more efficiently with some extra upkeep. The better you take care of them, the longer they’ll last.”
Use this checklist from Mr. Appliance® to keep your fridge operating at its best.
- Keep the refrigerator and freezer well-stocked. It takes more energy to cool and empty fridge.
- Clean the condenser coils behind the refrigerator. Unplug it and gently remove the dust and dirt with a brush or vacuum.
- Defrost it. Frost buildup reduces energy efficiency.
- Check temperature settings. The refrigerator temperature should be 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer temperature 0-5 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Test the refrigerator seals for wear. Slide a piece of paper halfway in the door. If the paper pulls out easily, you may need a replacement seal.
- Position the refrigerator efficiently. Try to keep it away from heat sources, like the oven, dishwasher and windows that receive direct sunlight.
