Heat Up the Holidays

Turkey Time

When your making your list and checking it twice, don’t forget to add your oven this holiday season. The holidays are a time for family and friends to gather and eat, which means your oven is working overtime and those stuck-on spills are a gift you can’t return.  Keep your oven off the naughty list this holiday season by giving your oven what it really wants this year, a deep cleaning.

A coal-filled oven. Do you have lumps of coal in more places then your stocking? Be sure to check for burned food that is caked inside gas vents or on the heating element. Remove and clean the black leftovers to keep your oven cooking efficiently during your festive feasts.

Give seasonal gifts. ‘Twas the night before your holiday dinner and your self-cleaning oven fails, leaving you having to replace the fireside stockings with your uncooked turkey. Ovens have a tendency to fail during or soon after a self-cleaning cycle, so gift early and schedule the cleaning before the holidays to avoid a table full of hungry relatives.

Heat up the holidays. Dreaming of a winter wonderland outside and not in your oven? Make sure your oven is baking efficiently by seeing if the temperature on the dial matches the actual temperature inside the oven. The easiest solution is to check the oven with a digital oven thermometer. You can also buy a basic white cake mix and follow the directions exactly. If the cake is dry or undercooked, your oven temperature isn’t set correctly.

Up on the oven door, drip, drip, drip. If moisture is appearing on the outside of your oven, it probably means you have a faulty gasket. Gaskets maintain proper cooking temperatures and should be replaced at the first sign of a leak by a professional.

Deck the door with an oven light. Spread the holiday cheer by turning on lights in more places than your tree.  An oven light can save cooking time and energy by letting you look inside rather than opening the door. If your light is out, replace the bulb or have a professional check the connection.

Give the gift that keeps on giving by deep cleaning your oven to keep your family healthy and jolly all season long. Happy baking to all, and to all a great oven!

Tanna Marino, a former Mr. Appliance® technician turned Mr. Appliance franchise consultant with Mr. Appliance’s parent organization, The Dwyer Group®, was featured on NBC™s The Today Show on Wednesday, July 4, in a segment about helping more women break into predominantly male-dominated service and trade businesses.

In the segment, Mr. Appliance was introduced as a brand finding success with women on the front lines of service. Marino is shown carrying her equipment to the job site, showcasing her talents by working on a few appliances, and even provided a long list of appliances she is well-equipped and experienced to fix. She was a visible example of a woman finding opportunity during this economy by working with her hands and providing a much-needed service to homeowners.

“In this economy, every woman needs to know what employment opportunities are available to them, even those in predominantly male-dominated service and trade businesses,” saidMarino. “Most women don’t know the great success and personal fulfillment they can experience working as technicians in trade businesses or even that opening a franchise business specializing in a trade, can be viable, respectable profession.”

Marino, age 32, had always been handy growing up, whether hunting and fishing with her father or learning to lay tile by her mother. After high school, she moved to Houston looking for work and laid tile for a living for several years. In 2008, she joined Mr. Appliance of North Harris and Montgomery Counties in Conroe, Texas as a service professional. In October 2011, Marino was awarded Mr. Appliance’s Service Professional of the Year Award, a national award selected from Mr. Appliance’s over 150 franchises. In 2012, due to her hard work, dedication and unique perspective having been a successful woman working in the trades, Marino took a position at The Dwyer Group corporate office, responsible for growing the franchise organization’s brands by educating and targeting women and other underrepresented groups.

The Dwyer Group opened its doors in 1981 with only one brand and has grown to become the holding company of seven service-based franchise organizations: Aire Serv®, Glass Doctor®, Mr. Appliance®, Mr. Electric®, Mr. Rooter®, Rainbow International® and The Grounds Guys®.

“It is my personal charge to educate more women about the trade opportunities and change how they view these industries,” added Dina Dwyer-Owens, Chairwoman and CEO of The Dwyer Group, who is now working with a group called Helping Hands to create a scholarship for Women in Trades she will personally fund with the initial capital. “With opportunities available all across the country, the time is now for women displaced by the economy or those looking at their next business investment, to seek out career paths within the service industries.”

Together, The Dwyer Group brands provide a diverse array of specialty services through more than 1,300 franchises in the United States and Canada, while the company’s international master licensees service almost 300 franchise locations in seven other countries. The franchise family makes some 2 million residential and commercial service calls each year and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2011.

What’s With Your Ice?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012

By Lillyan Baker

One of the biggest issues with refrigerators is odor which usually results in stinky ice.  When you leave food in uncovered containers, the walls of the fridge and even the ice in the freezer can take on those odors. Enjoy refreshing ice cubes again by installing an in-line water filter in the icemaker water line just before the fill valve. If you are an ambitious homeowner, this can be a DIY project, or you can call a professional to install and give a diagnosis of your appliance. Either way, be sure to replace annually.

Hints From Heloise: Laundry Tips You Need To Know

Hints From Heloise

Mary Kay Liston, vice president of operations for Mr. Appliance came across a great laundry and energy article the other morning while enjoying the newspaper. Hints From Heloise, a nationally syndicated newspaper column which features household and lifestyle tips is based on Waco, Texas born, Heloise. This article of Dear Heloise tips features several great laundry and energy tips that you need to know.

Dear Heloise: To my dismay, the water pump on my washing machine failed. The cause of failure was not the product, but the operator-me. Imagine my surprise and shock when the repairman pulled the underwire from a bra out of the pump.

He presented me with a mesh bag to use from that day forward to contain the bras, as well as any small items. So, ladies, be warned. That was an expensive bra.-A California Read, via email.

Dear Heloise: I would lie t pass on this hint: If I have worn a garment for only a few houses and it’s not really “dirty,” I rehand it in my closet inside-out.

Later, when I am looking for something to wear, I can easily spot and give first consideration to any lightly worn garments.

This cuts down on unnecessary laundry, saving both money and labor.-Jami J. in Corona, Calif.

Dear Heloise: One thing I have noticed that causes a large amount of unnecessary energy loss is leaving exhaust fans, especially in bathrooms, running too long or in same cases all day.

People don’t realize that exhaust fan pull heated or air-conditioned air out of the building or into the attic.

This air has to be reheated or cooled, which uses lots of energy and adds to energy costs.-Ruben T. in Amarillo, Texas.
